You, as the client, cannot do this process wrong. No two people process emotions the exact same way, and no two sessions are alike. However, some performance anxiety is normal, especially in the first sessions.
Rest assured that you don’t have to know what to do because your therapist does! Feel free to express potential confusion or questions and let me support you through any initial worry about the process.
No, absolutely not. You can take a break anytime. You may want to look at me for support, close your eyes, or maybe you feel drawn to a new eye position.
You might experience significant emotions, physical sensations, memories, scenarios in your mind’s eye, new insights and more. Other people may not have much awareness of what is happening, and this is perfectly fine.
Brainspotting therapists are continually attuning to you and watching for reflexes so as to maximize healing.
It’s up to you. Some people prefer to stay silent for quite a while in between letting the therapist know what they are experiencing. Others are verbal processors and find themselves talking frequently to the therapist. Again, the client cannot do the process wrong!
Talking activates the prefrontal cortex, or the ‘logical brain.” With Brainspotting, many times the client is processing in the midbrain, where trauma is stored and where many times we are not so verbal.
Brainspotting therapists don’t want to interrupt and pull you out of the deep healing that may be happening by engaging excessively with the logical part of your brain. I am here to support you, to align with you and to attune to you as we trust your brain’s own ability to heal.
If you don’t feel anything, or if you sense that not much is happening, that’s ok! It is perfectly possible that you are having a productive session even in the absence of strong feelings.
Two ways that trauma can show up are as hyperarousal of the nervous system or hypo arousal of the nervous system. In hyperarousal, it’s common to feel activated, whereas hypo arousal is more often expressed as a “frozen” or numb state.
But even without strong physical or emotional feelings, your brain is still processing information on a deeper level. It’s always ok to communicate with your therapist so they can adjust the approach and help you access the necessary areas for healing.
